Personally I tell people the only safe way to use a cell phone is to have someone 10 km away carry and use it for you.
As most are not ready for that safe cell phone use practice. Don’t carry it on you body -especially not pants pocket or under a bra strap nor in you left front shirt pocket. When using it always on speaker mode and held at arms length away from you. If one feels the need to use ear plugs (even when listening to their music) use air buds to disconnect the phone from the ears with a “tube of air” The usual location of the ear phone jack is immediately next to the antenna and in practice the wire in the antenna becomes an extension of the antenna.
Telling people the risks softly does little good I have found the “shock” approach connects better. One technique I use is an rf meter next to my lap top and I frequently show people the difference when the wifi is off and the reading usually is around 50 mvilivolts/m (in the near field only measure the electric field and if ones meter measures the magnetic field separately (most don’t) measure both independently) – the power density reading is an assumed value based on if you were in the far field) turn the wifi on (my laptop has a physical switch in addition to the other ways to switch the wifi mode) and the reading jumps to 1200 + millivolts/meter. I then tell them the laptop is radiating on 2 frequencies and the meter only picks up one of them I also tell them that there would also be a similar spike coming from a wifi router if one was nearby. Most people’s eyes almost pop out of their heads when they see the numbers (numbers connect better than flickering lights). A similar demonstration can be done with a cell phone – usually helps to get them to make a call or send a text to trigger the transmission mode – same effect but the laptop seems to be more dramatic for people.
When I also remind them to look at the left side of my face, they go away with a powerful image of the harm EMR can cause.
