Health Council of the Netherlands: leukemia may be more frequent with high-voltage lines
“There are indications that leukemia occurs more often in adults who live near high voltage power lines. The Health Council of the Netherlands reports this. The magnetic fields around high-voltage lines are a possible explanation…….The council also studied exposure to magnetic fields at, for instance, electricity companies, where exposure levels can be higher than in a residential environment. “In research into occupational exposure, indications have been found for an increased risk of ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, leukemia and some other forms of cancer”, the Health Council states.

Because it is not clear from what level the risk might increase, the council recommends that ‘as a precaution, occupational exposure to magnetic fields should be kept as low as reasonably possible (= ALARA)’. The council also recommends that more research be carried out into magnetic fields, partly because the use of electricity will probably increase as a result of the energy transition.”
This is not news, although much of the evidence has pertained to children, who are much more vulnerable. Studies have been done and in 2002, IARC classified very low frequency EMF as a 2B “possible human carcinogen” based on evidence that children living near high power lines were at greater risk of leukemia.
