2) Excellent notes from the C4ST meeting with Dr. Timothy Schoechle, author of “Re-inventing Wires”, start on page 3/17. Timothy explains why fiber is far superior to any wireless system, and encourages the development of community networks which would be able to function during larger outages and would be far more resilient than the enormous grid. His book is available at:

It’s only 156 pages and I highly recommend it.

3) As more pieces of the vital infrastructures, such as water and electricity, become connected to the internet, their and our vulnerability increases. It is far easier for a digital, wireless system to be hacked than an analog, wired one. Networks are ideal targets and yet it seems the message is late in getting through to various governments. One answer is to have local networks, like the one that could be developed after Connected Coast brings fiber optic to the community. Please share this information with your local government and with MLAs, too.

Cyber Threats Increase as Utilities Link Control Systems to Internet; 11 Identified “Bad Actors

Vulnerabilities Grow as Utilities Link Control Systems to the Internet

The Biden administration and utility companies are trying to reduce the risks, but at least 15 well-equipped groups are hunting for ways in.

The global electric utility sector is facing an increasingly dangerous cyberthreat landscape, even though there hasn’t been a publicly witnessed disruptive attack over the past five years. Utilities worldwide have been strengthening their security against threats to their IT networks but have not paid enough attention to their industrial control systems, or ICS, and operational technology, or OT, systems.”

James Woolsey, former head of CIA, has been warning about an attack on the infrastructure being a major threat, with the potential to cause a return to the “dark ages” for a very long time.

Former CIA Director Warns: ‘Two-Thirds Of US Population’ Would Die From EMP Attack

“A former CIA director says the United States is not doing enough to protect itself from an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack, which he calls the greatest threat to the United States because it would bring “our civilization to a cold, dark halt.””
