1) I must have missed the news about the Space X application that was just approved by CRTC because this is the first I recall hearing about this. There were 2,585 interventions, “mostly positive” from people in rural areas who want to have internet access. I wonder if there is any way to submit comments to ISED — you’d think there would be some other agency involved with this. Perhaps a good question to ask of your MP. There are satellites in the skies over the southern areas (at least) of Canada already, so why more? This is a nightmare.
Elon Musk’s satellite internet plan gets green light from Canadian regulator
“The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has approved an Elon Musk-owned company’s application to provide low Earth orbit satellite internet to rural Canadians.
One of the company’s projects is to bring high-speed internet service to hard-to-reach rural areas around the globe by launching thousands of small satellites that will orbit just 550 kilometres above the Earth, vastly speeding interaction with residential computers on the ground.
Traditional telecommunications satellites orbit at more that 20,000 km above the Earth…
SpaceX has said it will begin beta tests on the service with volunteer households in Canada and northern areas of the United States this fall.”

The article has a lot of very interesting links, for example re. Huawei, and what could happen to our network. Has all of the Huawei equipment been removed from the telecoms’ devices and transmitters?
Given the vulnerability of any wireless grid, Huawei is not the only “actor” who could damage our services and security.

The auto industry would also be at risk, especially with 5G powering the future of self-driving cars, explains Arthur Herman, a senior fellow at the Washington D.C.-based Hudson* Institute. “Your autonomous vehicle-makers and artificial intelligence software that power them involve an enormous amount of intellectual property—especially in the early stages of development,” he says. “If you have the means, through Huawei’s control of 5G of that intellectual property flowing to somebody else—flowing to China—for use in its development in its technologies, that’s a big problem.” The Chinese government would be able to watch patterns of autonomous vehicles to track, say, government officials, or the supply chain of the military.
This would lead to the second major concern of Chinese influence with its control over technologies connected to 5G networks in Canada: interrupting critical infrastructure services.”
