1)  We all know that wireless devices are much more easily hacked than wired ones are. Also, medical devices, like pacemakers, deep brain implants, etc. are vulnerable to EMR emissions, hence the warnings at libraries and airports.  But now, the FDA in the US is warning of possible cybersecurity attacks which could cause major health problems for the victim. With 5G and the IoT, one of the goals is to connect everything via a network grid. This will include these very important and vulnerable devices.

FDA informs patients, providers and manufacturers about potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities for connected medical devices and health care networks that use certain communication software

“Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is informing patients, health care professionals, IT staff in health care facilities and manufacturers of a set of cybersecurity vulnerabilities, referred to as “URGENT/11,” that—if exploited by a remote attacker—may introduce risks for medical devices and hospital networks. URGENT/11 affects several operating systems that may then impact certain medical devices connected to a communications network, such as wi-fi and public or home Internet, as well as other connected equipment such as routers, connected phones and other critical infrastructure equipment. These cybersecurity vulnerabilities may allow a remote user to take control of a medical device and change its function, cause denial of service, or cause information leaks or logical flaws, which may prevent a device from functioning properly or at all…

“While we are not aware of patients who may have been harmed by this particular cybersecurity vulnerability, the risk of patient harm if such a vulnerability were left unaddressed could be significant,” said Suzanne Schwartz, M.D., MBA, deputy director of the Office of Strategic Partnerships and Technology Innovation in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “The safety communication issued today contains recommendations for what actions patients, health care providers and manufacturers should take to reduce the risk this vulnerability could pose. It’s important for manufacturers to be aware that the nature of these vulnerabilities allows the attack to occur undetected and without user interaction. Because an attack may be interpreted by the device as a normal network communication, it may remain invisible to security measures.”

2) In the US, groups are pressuring their state governments to limit the amount of RF children are exposed to and to help educate people about the dangers associated with wireless devices, especially cell phones.  Below, in Letters, is a request from Cece Doucette for support for bills being presented in Massachusetts.  A template is provided and she is asking for many (even those living outside the US) to show support by submitting it to those in the Mass. legislature. I hope you will consider taking a few minutes to do so.  I have provided links to the bills.

It is time that we organize to get some bills presented to our provincial government to address major concerns, such as Wi-Fi in schools and labelling cell phones.

3) A very interesting video sent by a member. Many of us use RF meters to measure the exposure levels in the environment, but our bodies are wonderful antennae and they should be measured, too.

Subject: New Request: Two More MA EMF Bills up for Public Hearing!

***   This is different from last month’s smart meter bills request — please read!   *** Thank you to everyone who sent in testimony for the three Massachusetts smart meter bills in September, we are gaining momentum! We need to ask another favor of all of you. (Yes, even those who have never done something like this before, and those who are already so busy — we won’t get this chance for another two years and a lot of harm will happen with 5G small cell antennas being forced into many of our neighborhoods right now.) Last session, our Joint Committee on Consumer Protection was assigned two right-to-know bills that emulate the Berkeley, CA ordinance. The bills would educate consumers on the legal fine print that comes with wireless devices warning of radiation exposures. The Committee heard enough testimony from folks like you and I that they actually assigned a research analyst to investigate EMFs — then the committee wrote its own bill to form a commission to address this issue! The bill timed out at the end of December — not uncommon for a first-time bill in Massachusetts — but Senator Julian Cyr has brought it back this session, along with a bill to protect children from hand-held devices. With Boston and other towns getting smothered in small cell antennas, and with New Hampshire and Oregon having recently passed laws to address wireless radiation, we are hopeful Massachusetts will be next to act — which could add strength to efforts in other places too. We would be very grateful if each of you could send in a statement of support — no matter how short or long as a growing number of voices can really make a difference! This is a different set of legislators from the smart meter bills last month. If you submitted, you are welcome to just forward your testimony to the new set of public servants listed on the new template, or modify your submission as you wish — but please submit.
