I have seen the form letter your staff member Tim Singer sent round in response to concerns about Safety Code
6 on your behalf. It includes a key paragraph that reads as follows:
When developing the exposure limits in Safety Code 6, Health Canada scientists consider all relevant peer-reviewed scientific studies and employ a weight-of-evidence approach to evaluate possible health risks from exposure to Radio Frequency (RF) energy. Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 makes Canada’s limits among the most stringent science-based limits in the world. Safety Code 6 has always established and maintained a recommended human exposure limit that is far below the threshold for the occurrence of all established adverse health effects associated with RF field exposure. These effects are nerve stimulation (a tingling sensation) and tissue heating. It is not true that Canada’s exposure limits are the most stringent in the world. To claim them as science based is disingenuous, since important science on the physiological response of biological cells is ignored.
It is true that there is no reason to specify limits for ionising radiation, since ionising Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) is not relevant at the frequencies and amplitudes involved in the systems concerned.
It is also true that the exposure limits provide reasonable protection from any heating effects. However …
The problem is that the whole field of biological response to externally applied EMR, producing non-thermal effects— with its extensive literature, is completely ignored.
The minute voltages (Electromotive Forces, or EMFs) that are generated in biological tissues as a result of externally applied EMR are greatly amplified by electro-physiological mechanisms associated with cells and cell membranes, which results in interference with the voltage-controlled “gates” in the cell membranes—gates that are concerned to allow the influx of nutrients, the elimination of waste products, and(in the case of nerve cells) the transmission of nerve pulses along the nerve fibres as well as the release of neurotransmitters.
One effect is interference with the Voltage Controlled Calcium Gate (VCCGs), opening them improperly, which floods the cells with inappropriate amounts of calcium.
The adverse cellular effects from this kind of interference include: cellular DNA damage; lowered fertility; neurological/neuropsychiatric effects; interference with the mechanism of apoptosis (the important mechanism of programmed cell death which eliminates pre-cancerous and virus-infected cells, and plays an important rôle as part of the immune system); imposition of oxidative stress (a key factor in many chronic diseases); widespread endocrine (hormonal) disruption; and increased cancer rates. Interference with the transfer properties of the cell membranes provides a plausible basis for a number of serious otherwise inexplicable problems arising from EMR exposure.
Furthermore, it turns out that pulsed EMR effects are, in most cases, much more biologically active than nonpulsed EMR effects, of particular concern now that 5G systems are being introduced with their shorter (more energetic) wavelengths, and reduced pulse widths.
(footnote: Cells also have internal mechanisms to manage their “trash”, but some of it has to be physically passed out of the cell by a process known as “exocytosis” using the gates.)
It is past time to bring Safety Code 6 up to a reasonable scientific standard, and, in the meantime, to apply far more stringent limits on EMR until the topic has been properly investigated and the updated findings incorporated into the code’s safe exposure limits, especially with the advent of 5G systems that, as noted, operate at higher frequencies (more energetic) and with shorter pulses (more active).
I wrote some augmented lecture notes based on a lecture on the topic, that include a further link (on the first page) to the definitive reference paper written by Dr. Martin Pall, who gave the lecture, and who has been conducting research in the area of EMR effects for many years.
