1) This should concern anyone going to, or anyone whose family members are going to, UBC.

2) Many have predicted that data was being gathered by many devices and would, ultimately, be used to monitor every aspect of our lives. A FIRST – a major insurance company is requiring fitness monitoring as part of its life insurance policies. Policyholders get extra discounts for using wearable wireless devices to monitor their exercise, devices like Fitbit which have been shown to cause physical harm to those who wear them.
John Hancock will include fitness tracking in all life insurance policies
“John Hancock, one of the oldest and largest North American life insurers, will stop underwriting traditional life insurance and instead sell only interactive policies that track fitness and health data through wearable devices and smartphones, the company said on Wednesday.
The move by the 156-year-old insurer, owned by Canada’s Manulife Financial, marks a major shift for the company, which unveiled its first interactive life insurance policy in 2015. It is now applying the model across all of its life coverage… Policyholders score premium discounts for hitting exercise targets tracked on wearable devices such as a Fitbit or Apple Watch and get gift cards for retail stores and other perks by logging their workouts and healthy food purchases in an app.”
Fitbits Still Lauded as Beneficial Despite Various Unpleasant Symptoms Reported, Class Action Lawsuits Due to Inaccurate Heart Monitor Readings and Rashes
“Activist Post, Natural Blaze, and other publications have already published articles about Fitbit wearers experiencing a wide range of unpleasant and sometimes life threatening symptoms. Some wearers are literally being shocked by these devices. Complaints have also been posted on the Fitbit community board since at least January 2016.
There was a class action lawsuit in 2014 because some wearers were getting rashes. There was also a 2016 class action lawsuit by wearers reporting inaccurate heart monitor readings.”
3) A member asked that I share a series of slides by the US electrical engineer about the ITRON smeter. William (Bill) Bathgate provides a whole lot of info that will remind us why we all fighting so hard to have the choice to have an analog meter and NOT to have a smeter. The member asked me to let everyone know that there are many of us still fighting, some to keep our analogs and some to get them back.
Bill Bathgate was one of the Electrical Engineers who contributed info about design flaws for my Fire Report.
